On the Horizon
Broadway Bridge ~ Daytona

This summer and fall have been a fulfilling and rewarding time for Alan. Figg Engineering Group, a world renowned company dedicated solely to building bridges, commissioned Alan to create a portfolio of images from some of their signature projects in Florida. These included: the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys, the 17th Street Causeway Bridge in Ft. Lauderdale, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg/ Clearwater, the new Lee Roy Selman Crosstown Expressway in Tampa and the Broadway Bridge in Daytona. This partnership evolved harmoniously for both parties share a similar vision. Figg, whose philosophy is "Creating Bridges as Art" and Alan who sees their creations as art. The success of this project was based on his strategy - keep it simple. He would arrive at each location and become familiar with the different aspects of each bridge. Shoots were then scheduled in the morning before dawn to about 9 a.m. and late in the afternoon into twilight over a period of days. Alan took advantage of every possible angle and lighting scenario utilizing positions from land, sea and air.

This commission, another aspect of Alan's expertise beyond fine art, gallery ownership, and publishing, inspired him to create award-winning architectural images. Selected works from this project will be featured at his Key West and Hawk's Cay galleries and online at alanmaltz.com.

Figg Engineering Group has earned their clients over 165 design awards, including three of the five Presidential Awards for aesthetic achievement, awarded for bridges through the National Endowment for the Arts. The Presidential Award winners are the Sunshine Skyway in Florida, the Linn Cove Viaduct in North Carolina and the Natchez Trace Parkway Arches in Tennessee.
